Demas Nwoko's Idumuje-Ugboko House and Studio

New Culture Studios reflects Demas Nwoko’s belief that architecture can be both culturally grounded and environmentally responsive. Initiated in 1967, the complex is built with latcrete blocks, a mixture of laterite soil and Portland cement alongside locally sourced wood and stone, allowing the buildings to sit quietly within their surroundings. Its multipurpose rooms and amphitheatre function as spaces for gathering, performance, and exchange, pointing to Nwoko’s ongoing effort to hold modern architectural ideas in conversation with indigenous forms and building traditions. These works were produced on commission for Wallpaper.
